Q&A: Whats the best way to remove decorative crystals from a cell phone without damaging its finish?

Question by fyrecrackercass: Whats the best way to remove decorative crystals from a cell phone without damaging its finish?
I bought a used Sidekick II on ebay and when it arrived I noticed the previous owner had decorated around the wheels and buttons with crystals from one of those "bling kits". I did this on a phone I had a few years ago and eventually just threw it away because taking all the crystals off was too daunting. This is only about 10-20 and some of them have already fallen off, leaving only the mirror residue behind. Id like to remove them all and get the residue off but Im not sure what to use. I was going to try nail polish remover but I dont want to damage the actual phone in the process.

  1. The best way to remove crystals is with a heat gun. Most people don’t have a heat gun, but a hair dryer is good enough.

First, remove anything that you can, such as the bumpers. Then
select the highest setting on the hair dryer and run it over the crystals for about 30 sec. – 1 minutes (DO NOT set the hair dryer for more than a minute over your phone on high).

If that doesn’t work, select a lower setting and go over that part as if you were blow drying your hair. Eventually, the crystal will be loose enough to take off. The glue and residue will be soft enough for you to easily wipe off with a soft cloth/Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol.

  2. Get online with TrailTough.com . If you don’t see one online give them a call on their 800 number listed there.
    Good luck.
