Robellini Phoenix Palm Tree seeds tips?
Question by Shtrfrpr: Robellini Phoenix Palm Tree seeds tips?
I recently bought a dozen Robellini Phoenix Palm Tree seeds and I was curious if anyone had any tips or advice on growing them
. I was told by the company to presoak the seeds(which is being done right now). I plan on only planting them 1/2 in. deep as instructed but i'm uncertain how much sun light I should give them once they begin growing or how much water (ect.). Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It may help to use a seed heating mat, and once they root use a fair amount of vermiculite, which will aid in prevention of root rot. They can take a fair amount of light, but do not allow the soil to dry out completely. This palm is indigenous to wet areas, like in the river plains in Southeast Asia-they multi-trunk to withstand flooding. Outside, they do not like freezes, and thrive in areas that have lows above 38 degrees F. The hybridized version can be single trunk, but the true Pygmy is a multi-trunk species.
Good luck!
water a couple times a week, fertilize with palm food as directed on fertilizer mine says every 3 months. it could be that the trees are adapting and trying to grow a new leaf which will come out of the middle of tree. so its lets the lower ones die.
This is almost certainly lack of humidity. If the entire leaf dries up, then it’s not enough water; if it goes yellow/mushy, then it usually too much water, but just the tips of the leaves is almost always lack of humidity. Obviously, the cure is to increase humidity in some way; that doesn’t necessarily mean to give it more water, but rather to get more water into the air around it. If it’s outdoors, you may want to use a sprinkler hose around it to do the job; if it’s indoors, then setting the pot on a pebble tray with water almost to the top of the pebbles is usually sufficient. Good luck!
There are three things in the water on the the soil that cause
tip burn (brown tips):
1. Chlorine
2. Fluoride.
3. High dissolved salt content and or hard water build up.
To solve all three problems use gallon distilled water. But since distilled water has no nutrients you’d have to add 1/4 the recommended amount 10-10-10 fertilizer with micro nutrients like Schultz or Miracle grow and water every 2 weeks or when the bottom soil in the pot is almost dry.
Chlorine dissipates from water if left in a container uncovered overnight. Interestingly enough this is why dogs like to drink from the toilet, no chlorine smell.
Salt and hard water build up could be minimized by letting water run through the bottom at every watering. This is called leaching.
Fluoride – from the water or from perlite (usually from an African mine source) will not kill the plant but it would just look bad if its coming from the water and it will kill it within months if its in the perlite. Perlite is that white styrofoam looking stuff but crumbles when you squish it usually in potting soil. Leaching will help reduce the fluoride problem as well but will not eliminate it.
Hope this helps.

needs more moisture in the air—get some large pans or trays, put a layer of pebbles in it then fill with water. set your pots of palms on that. you can trim the brown off with sharp scissors–they will not turn green again.
