Nokia N79 Joins the N96 and N85 in the Nokia N-series Range

The N-Series range of multimedia mobile phones from Nokia has expanded to include the Nokia N79, an upgraded version of the previous N78 with some new technology and features but a similar design.

The Nokia N79 features GPS with GeoTagging which allows users to take pictures wherever they may be and tag their location on a map as well as fix the picture to that location, this way the user can build up a database of visited locations for future reference.

The N79 offers a better camera than the N78, this has been upgraded from a 3 megapixel to a 5 megapixel lens to fall in line with current models like the Nokia N96 and Nokia N85, the biggest difference between the N79 and the two aforementioned models is that it is a candy bar design not a sliding phone.

A new feature to the N79 over the N78 is the ability to personlise the exterior which in turn changes the display, when a user simply swaps the colour of the back casing of the Nokia N79 the handset automatically adapts the theme colour of the main display to match so not only will your phone match your mood on the outside but when the phone is used the backlight and theme will match as well.

Browsing the internet on the Nokia N79 is how it should be and not the scaled down 'mobile' version, users can surf full html pages and select an area on the page to then zoom into for more detail so rather than a lack lusted text based WAP surfing experience the user can view the internet as it was intended.

The Nokia N79 also features Nokia Maps, a service that allows users to view maps of over 150 countries which can be searched by addresses, landmarks and points of interest, users can even access phone numbers for locations where available before the Nokia N79 plans a route to the destination on screen.

The N79 has a neat little trick in that it has an integrated FM transmitter, this allows the user to transmit their music from the phone to an in-car radio or standard FM radio to listen to their favourite tracks, users simply choose a frequency and then tune in the radio to that frequency, so long as they are within two to three meters of the recieving device the music will play continuously until the link is broken.

The Nokia N79 is a 3G enabled mobile phone, this means that it is subject to the fast download speeds available to these type of handsets, users can download new mobile content such as ringtones and games or acces the Nokia Music Store to search from thousands of music titles. 3G also allows for streaming media such as news and sports headlines, movie trailers and music videos as well as facilitating face to face video calling with compatible handsets.

Thankfully, Nokia have also included a standard 3.5mm jack socket so that users can choos eto use their own headphones rather than the supplied, this has been a real complaint for many users of new mobile phones and Nokia have hit the nail on the head this time.

The differences betwen the Nokia N79, Nokia N85 and Nokia N96 lay mostly in the overall design of the phones, both the N96 and N85 are slide phones with the N96 even featuring a rear built-in stand for watching movies, the Nokia N79 offers a smaller screen but is also far lighter and more portable than its two larger cousins, add to this a lens cover for the high specification camera and the personalisation options and the N79 makes for an attractive and functional device.

The N79, Nokia N96 and Nokia N85 are just three of many new N-Series phones, for more information pease refer to our mobile phones shop online.

Nokia N82: Can You Dig It?

Every year Nokia never runs out of style when it comes to mobile phones. There is always something new to crave for and bring into advanced technology its wildest imaginings. Previously, it was N73 that was causing a fad in the mobile-addicted culture. Now, it has released the Nokia N82. And hear Nokia proudly claiming this new N-series phone to be the best camera-phone in the marketplace now.

It turned out that these Finnish manufacturers were right. The Nokia N82 constitutes every aspect of multimedia requirement of a modern-day user. First is the camera that amazingly takes quality pictures and video recordings. What with its 5-megapixels, Xenon flash, auto-focus, and Carl Zeiss lens support, you can truly expect a quality-class compact digital camera enclosed in a mobile body. The camera has a fast response time for photo use.

Secondly the mobile phone is well set for excellent use. The light-handed case compensated for its bulky candy-bar image in back and silver colors. The keypads are rather small from the regular keys, but not too crammed as well, so it is still user-friendly. The phone has a USB port on the right side, a micro SD memory slot in the middle, and the changing port almost at the bottom. Also at the bottom is the phone’s microphone. Speakers also surround the corners of the phone. It even has a jack point of 3.5mm for the headphones. A smart trick to save the wire of the headphones is that the jack point is placed on the top corner of the phone, in cases when you want to put the phone in your pocket for safekeeping. RealPlayer, the media player software still is an outstanding add-on in this phone. Connectivity for that wired mind is the popular Wi-Fi, GPS, HSDPA, USB, and Bluetooth.

Created for convenience, the menu is a quick pick for accessing other functions and navigation. The manufacturer’s main concern is its simple use and no time wasted by navigating in and out of one function to another. The normal features of a Nokia mobile phone like the regular messaging system, average battery life, additional flash and memory cards, and the cool ring tone and audio-video formats supported are still made intact in this handset.

In short, Nokia N82 is a great phone and camera in one. It is not very often that you almost have everything you need in a single phone model. No, that is not Nokia’s marketing trick. But with N82, Nokia now gives us a taste of everything in a snap. The little weak sides of the handset like the keys can be disguised eventually by the overall superb functionality and fashionable image of the phone.

A balanced overview is applied for Nokia N82. The rest is for you to personally discover if this camera-phone suits your needs or not or if the budget for this is way too high for its enhancements. Anyway, besides reading mobile reviews, the smartest thing to do before buying that latest phone gadget is to try it out in your local stores.

Nokia N95 Tips and Tricks

This tips and tricks section will be split into two halves; 1. Improving battery life, as anyone who owns a N95 will know the battery drains pretty quickly. 2. Other tips and tricks that might be useful.

Maximising the Nokia N95 Battery Life.

Now when you first get a Nokia N95 out the box, charge it up, then begin to play with it you notice that after about an hour of play the battery indicator begins to disappear fairly quickly. This seemed strange to me as my previous phone was a Nokia N73 and the battery lasted for absolutely ages, granted there are some features on the N95 that aren't present on the N73 such as the Wi-Fi and GPS functionality but not enough to warrant such a big battery drain. After much playing around with the phones settings etc I have managed to get my N95's battery life close to or if not on par with my old N73, nevertheless much improved over the battery life when using the N95 straight out of the box.

Cycle the Battery

The first thing to do to improve the battery life, and the one which I found gave the best battery gain, is to give the battery one complete charge/discharge cycle. When first taking the phone out of the box allow the battery to charge completely before unplugging it from the power adapter. Then do everything you can to drain the battery, turn on the Bluetooth, turn on the Wi-Fi, play music, whatever it takes to drain the battery. Your goal is to drain the battery to the point where it shuts itself off, even when it shuts itself off try and turn it on again and keep draining the battery. Keep doing this till the phone will no longer boot. When this happens take the battery out and wait a few seconds. Replace the battery and attempt to turn it on again, if it turns on then use it till the phone shuts off again. Now place the N95 back on charge and leave until the charging cycle is complete. When using the Nokia N95 now it will seem to last a lot longer on battery before you get warning messages of low battery. I have a theory about how this process seems to increase battery life which may be entirely inaccurate, if so and you know why this has this effect then please share your views via the forum. I believe that this process does not change the battery in any way, rather it serves as a method in which to calibrate the N95 as to how long it can operate with the voltage that remains. Without putting the phone through a complete charge/discharge cycle the N95 has no choice but to refer to its default threshold which may have been set slightly higher when manufactured.

Turn off your Bluetooth.

The next thing to do to increase battery life is to switch the Bluetooth function to off when not in use. This may sound silly but a lot of people forget that their Bluetooth is on throughout the day, this wastes battery power and could also leave you open to an attack on your phone via Bluetooth if left switched on.

Switch off Wi-Fi Scanning.

Wi-Fi much like Bluetooth wastes battery power when in idle use. Make sure you turn this function off when not using it. This then also protects your phone from an attack via Wi-Fi.

Turn off 3G scanning if you don't use 3G.

Your Nokia N95 by default is set to periodically search for a 3G signal which also contributes to the depletion of the battery, if you don't use 3G then you can turn 3G scanning off by going to; menu, tools, settings, phone, network - change the network mode setting to 'GSM'.

The three factors above will greatly increase your battery life, if you wanted to increase the battery life still further than you can perform these tasks as follows;

Adjust the Screen Brightness.

The fact that the screen on your N95 lights up means that it's wasting energy, You can minimise the waste by turning down the brightness. Go to; menu, tools, settings, general, personalisation, display - change the light sensor from the default position to 'minimum'.

Adjust the Light Time-Out.

The less time that your screen is lit up for, the more energy you're going to save.

You can adjust the light time-out by going to; menu, tools, settings, general, personalisation, display - change the light time-out accordingly.

Power Saver Time-Out.

You can also adjust the length of time that the phone waits before going into power save mode. Obviously the sooner the Nokia N95 goes into power save mode, the more battery power you're going to save.

Go to; menu, tools, settings, general, personalisation, display - reduce the power saver time-out option from 60 seconds to say 30 seconds.

Other Tips and Tricks

Switching Between Silent and General.

Did you know that there was a quick way to switch between the 'General' profile and the 'Silent' profile on the Nokia N95? With the keypad open just press and hold the '#' key.

Reducing the Time Between Image Captures.

Does it frustrate you that when you want to take photos in fairly quick succession you have to wait for the N95 to display the previously captured image before it will let you progress? Did you know that you can turn this feature off. When in the camera mode press options, settings - change the show captured image option to 'off'. The time between image captures is greatly reduced.

Go straight to Your Music.

If you press and then keep hold of the multimedia key it will cause you to go straight to your music player.

I hope these tips and tricks help you get the most out of your Nokia N95.
